As it is new, reinstall back to factory and then uninstall mcafee again and try another antivirus

Thanks for the response seahawk.
How do I go about doing a re-install? Can it be done by sd card?

Well with my acer, when you start the PC and the Acer logo appears, hit
Alt + F10 at the same time and you should be taken to the recovery console which will allow you to go back to factory settings - this should be the same for yours also
Have to make sure that you do the alt+f10 when the acer logo is showing, so be ready when you turn on the computer
If this does not get you in, post exactly what model you have there and will see what key combo it is - This is of course you did not receive any discs with the computer

Using Acer eRecovery Management
You can launch Acer eRecovery Management in a number of ways:
• By pressing the hotkey <Alt> + <F10> during the boot-up process, or at any time when you are running Microsoft® Windows®.
• From the Start menu, go to Start > (All) Programs > Empowering Technology > Acer eRecovery Management.
Then Choose "Restore system to factory default"
