This has been posted hundreds of times - in MOST States an unmarried couple cannot adopt a child. In ALL States the father has to sign a release. You cannot strip the father of his rights whether he is on the birth certificate or not.

If you do claim you don't know the identity of the father you are leaving yourself open to a world of trouble at some point in the future if he decides to become involved in the child's life.

The adoption must be done legally.
