I want to get a dog but I live by myself and am gone for 9 1/2 to 10 hours during the day. I don't want to leave a dog home alone all day. Do dogs get lonely and is it considered bad treatment leaving them alone for a long period?

They really do get lonely and can suffer from behavioural problems, and separation anxiety issues if left alone for that length of time. They can even become destructive and/or hurt themselves physically, apart from emotionally. Dogs get sad and lonely just like we do! The only difference being, that they can't tell you. They will show you in other ways, and some of those ways aren't pleasant! Although it is their only way of expressing themselves! Just like kids, they will act out to get attention.

This shouldn't stop you from adopting a deserving dog, but you need to take extra steps to make sure he is a happy, well balanced, and active dog. Research the breed that works best for you. The energy level of your dog will be very important. You don't want to get a high energy, hyperactive dog, or you're asking for trouble, if you are away from home for long periods everyday. A low energy breed would probably work best for you, but that doesn't mean he can be left alone for 9 or 10 hrs by himself.

You would need to hire someone, whether it be a friend or family member, or a professional dog walker to come in and take your dog out for long brisk walks, no matter what his energy level is. Dogs need to burn off their excess energy. That is their only outlet, and you will have a much better behaved dog. Pick your breed carefully though, and PLEASE adopt one! Don't buy one from a pet store, as they are likely to have come from a puppymill, and don't buy from a backyard breeder. There are many breed specific shelters, and they have puppies too if that is what you are looking for, but I think a dog that is a little older and already housetrained would be the best bet for you, since you are gone for so many hours a day.

Rescue dogs make the greatest pets! You can tell in their eyes, that they are grateful that you gave them a home, and quite likely saved their life!

I would highly recommend looking for an adult rescue who is already house trained. With the economy the way it is, there are many dogs being surrendered who have been wonderful family pets and possibly were accustomed to longer days. The advantages of an adult dog are endless! While your dog might need a midday potty break and walk, I hope that you will be able to provide daily exercise as it is a great way to bond with your new dog and provide leadership.
