Recently I got a virus on my laptop and it required me to wipe my whole laptop. After doing this, the laptop was fine with the exception of the USB ports not working. Whenever I plug something into the USB ports my laptop immediately freezes. Whether it is a flash drive, web cam, wireless mouse, or an iPod wire, the laptop freezes. I've tried updating my drivers, making sure the Plug-in-Play was started, and that the items being plugged in were not at fault (by plugging them into another computer). I also tried the uninstalling and reinstalling of the ports.

- AMD Turion 64 x 2
- ATI Radeon Xpress 1100\
- 120GB HDD
- 1 GB of RAM

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance.

My BIOs is up to date, and I ran the USB port check that was on the site listed above. Both of the USBREADY programs claimed checked and said that my the software, hardware, and the USB ports are working fine. Same problem though.

Try disabling DEP - this is a Microsoft fix, have not tried it on my; end though

Disable the DEP (Data Execution Prevention)
To disable the DEP, you reboot the computer and hit F8 to enter the boot selection menu.

Select Safe Mode.

Once the computer is booted up in Safe mode, click on Start and Run and type CMD and hit enter

Type the following;
Bootcfg /raw "/noexecute=alwaysoff /fastdetect" /id 1

Restart

Hi
Unfortunately the motherboard of Aspire 5100 has this problem, very often. The only solution (excluding a mobo replacing) is to insert a PMCIA USB 2 card, in order to 'save' the laptop.

Hi.

I have an Aspire 5315 and I think it has the same mobo issue. It can handle some low power devices like printer, mouse and <4Gb flash drive, but with a Kingston 8Gb or a Huawei 3G modem it freezes. I'm not sure if it depends on the power consumption or the usage percentage since giving some extra current with an usb hub and a power adapter doesn't make a difference.

I came to the conclusion that those usb-ports are screwed. I already bought an expresscard-usb adapter, but it didn't help me with the problem. Am I right if I say that expresscard slot uses usb-connections inside? If I am, I don't really have a fix then?

Hi Your case is different! It don't look like a motherbopard trouble, if you can see printers etc.
Probably there are some errors in your Operating System.
Try to uninstall any usb control , then let the system seeking the right drivers, otherwise you've to reinstall O.S. after a full format .
If you've another HDD, you may replace the old drive( only for a test) with this new one, and reistall O.S. . If anything(USB) is working, it means that your System is wrong or 'dirty', owing to malaware or other...

In your case , an external PMCIA USB card is not at all useful for usb peripherals with a high drain, and you need an external power supply.

Thanks for your reply!

I was thinking if some electronic components would overheat due to high bandwidth usage thus causing the problems :D But I'm happy if you're right.

This laptop came with Vista installed and it had problems with the 8Gb Kingston flash drive then. I have installed Windows 7 32bit afterwards and it has some problems too.

But I might give it a try with a live-Ubuntu. I just need to figure out how to install that 3G-modem in it :)

Hi again! I have made some testing now and it really seems that my Acer is broken in hardware level. I tried uninstalling any usb control as you suggested, didn't help at all.

I booted up from an Ubuntu 9.04 install disk into live mode. My 3G stick got installed right away and it worked fine the first five minutes. After that my computer freezed. Also tried my 3G modem in another PC with no problems.

So it cannot be software or driver related issue. Do you have any more suggestions?

Nevertheless I have lost my hope for this PC and will diss all Acers in the future. I'm going to buy a 3G router to use my Huawei 3G stick over ethernet or WLAN. It will solve my problems while my usb-mouse is still working.

I don't know what the others have done but you can always try. I tried an expresscard hub but it didn't work for me. Luckily I could return the hub where I ordered it from, so it didn't cost me anything after all. Ask the seller if you can return the adapter in case it doesn't work.

I am having problems with my Acer 5100 USB ports. The computer says they are working properly but when I go to plug in my mini mouse or memory card reader neither one of there devices have power. The computer makes a sound like it knows something is plugged in but seems like there isn't any power to them? HELP! If I need to replace this computer, I need to transfer things to a flash drive via USB! Ugh! I've had this for 4 years and expected it to last longer!
