How does people get their dogs not to pee in the house. I have chihuahuas and cockers. We take them out and as soon as they come in the pee and poop. What can I do?

How old are your dogs? Are you consistent? Do you praise them when they potty outside?

It's all trial and error, consistency and praise. Some dogs are more stubborn then others, or take a lot longer to learn, but I've never had a dog that doesn't eventually learn to potty outside.

First thing in the morning, take your dogs outside, go with them and encourage them to go potty, when they do, lots and lots of praise.

Half an hour after every meal try taking them out for a potty break. For a puppy, sometimes every hour is necessary.

There are lots of posts regarding this topic, You have a lot of options to try and just find what works for your dog. Start over with crate training is one, leave them outside until they are finished, lengthen the time you walk them, walk them more frequently and bring them in after they are done. Routine is what they learn from.

Are you breeding these dogs? You say "alot" of them are rescues. How many do you have? You absolutely under NO circumstances keep them in a crate for 24/7! Why would you want to do this? It is cruel!

Crate training is not jail, it's supposed to be a safe haven for the dog, like their den. If you put them in the crate 24/7, that's abuse, not training. Also, it's not recommended to have more than one dog in a crate while crate training.

Were the dogs abused before you got them? When you praise them, how do you praise them? When they have an accident in the house, what do you do? Do they pee and poo on the floor or are you using puppy pads or newspaper? All of these things need to be discussed before I can give you further advice.

Consistency and praise does work, but sometimes it takes a while, especially with an older dog or an abused dog.

A lot of people tell me that they're doing everything that I suggested in the first post, but, they aren't doing it consistently. Remember, a dog doesn't understand english, it doesn't understand when you yell or scream. First and foremost, this is a dog, and must be treated like a dog. You cannot expect to talk to a dog and have him understand what you want from him.

Showing the dog what you expect and then praising the dog when he does what you expect, that's the only way to get results. If you only train half way, then you'll never have a trained dog. It's all, or nothing.

No I'm not breeding these dogs. I meant to keep them in a crate just to potty train. I don't even like crates. My dogs sleep with me. Don't matter how many I have,what matter is that they are being taken care of. I just want to get them trained with the potty. All of my dogs are fixed and I have a couple more to get fixd..

Crate training can help with potty training, but you really will have to read up on it.

They might be trying to make a point and it might be best to take them one at a time. Like in the morning ( I don't know how many you have) about 30 min after meal.

Dogs like kids pick up good and bad behaviors from each other and they want to be validated personally as well... so may be try a personal touch.

I just wanted to understand. When you said you had a lot, I wondered how many you meant by a lot. It concerned me. Bless you for rescuing these dogs and making sure they are all spayed and neutered. :)

A crate isn't meant to be used as a tool for housebreaking. A crate is meant to be their den, and a safe place to go. The size of their crate is also very important. It should not be a large crate for a small dog. It should only be large enough for them to stand up and turn around to get comfortable. This is a place to go where they can relax, rest, or sleep. If the crate is larger, they are more likely to soil their crate, and it won't be a pleasant place for them. The door should be left open at times so they know that they can come and go, but when the door is closed, they know it's not roaming time.

If you watch the video that Altenweg posted, it will give you some really good info on how to housebreak them. Also, if you read the "sticky's" at the top of the dog forum, there are more tips there also.

Hello! I also have a dog. She is a west highland white terrior. She is getting on good with peeing & pooping outside but it takes time and you must praise him/her when the do the toilet outside! GOOD LUCK

Go outside with them and don't let them in until they have handled their business. Praise when they go by excitement and treats. Repeat several times a day for as long as it takes.
