I have a black lab, his stool goes back and forth from diarrhea and solid and sometimes has blood in it. We can't afford to take him to a vet. There are days that he won't drink anything, he eats fine, and is overweight. Does not eat much as far as people food, an occasional scrap here and there. Nothing I've been able to put my finger on if there is something he is getting in to. The last time he had this was about a month ago, it was more of a solid turd with mucus and blood. Smelled the same though, mucusy and diaretic. His energy level does not change much, he's kind of lazy. He was chasing the kids yesterday though, not sure if there is a connection. He is approximately 7 yrs old, and runs like a Clydesdale horse.

I don't see any way around not taking him to the Vet. I know you said you cannot afford to, but consider this. I know with my Vet, if you phone ahead, explain the situation, and ask that they allow you to pay the bill as you can, they will do that.
I know I've been in that position before myself, and the last thing you probably need is another bill, especially at Chrsitmas time.
But, with what you've described, I'd get him in, find out the source of the infection or what is causing the problems, and get him fixed up.
It may seem worse than it is, and won't cost much at all.

Is he on a monthly Vet prescribed Heartworm preventative? If not, start there. It could be intestinal parasites causing the GI upset. Also, if he drinks from ponds or streams, it could be Giardia-easily tested and medicated for. Is he fed a quality diet? Blood present in the stool is a sign of an inflammed GI tract. Everything that comes to mind can be taken care of with a simple trip to the vet as suggested.
