I usually go on group dates but I just met this guy and we don't have the same friends. How do I make this work?

Don't go on a group date. You need to grow out of that habit eventually otherwise you won't be able to have a good relationship.

How do I tell him I want to go on a date with just the two of us?

Say "Hey, you wanna (insert activity here) with me?" And if he asks if there's anybody else going, just tell him no there's not. Dates are SUPPOSED to be one-on-one, and group dating creates a more friendly like atmosphere. If you're aiming to be more of a "just friends' couple than an actually "serious" couple, I would just advise group dating. But if you wish to be serious, then just act casual about it. The more you make it a big deal to YOU, the more it shows to HIM. Remember that dating is supposed to be natural and/or fun. Don't stress with the beforehand too much.

Stick with first date for now haha. And when that one is over, there's nothing wrong with seeing a movie again and having dinner again haha. Try to see a different genre of movie though. The first date should be lighthearted and fun, so I would usually go to a comedy and swap funny stories at dinner. The second time, let him choose. And if he's not willing to choose, just see what you think is good. Chances are though, if you let him pick, it'll show you a lot about his personality, but don't read TOO deeply. Just because he may like an action movie with tons of girls in bikinis doesn't mean a lot about his relationship with you.

There are other things you can do besides movies and dinner. Go bowling, play pool, roller skating, ice skating, etc. You can do things together that your both like and have fun. Dating is all about getting to know one another and having fun doing it.
