I bought a TroyBilt generator off a guy from Craigslist that looks new, only thing wrong with it is the frame itself is warped but doesn't affect how it works,it is a model 030245 10hp B&S engine OHV,I want to change oil in it and go to straight synthetic, bud has access to automotive oil Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 and I am curious if this oil will damage the engine or would it be safe to run,the generator was bought just in case we lose power over the winter months in NC,and does anyone know what the engine codes on the OHV cover tells us,thank you

30 W non-detergent oil. Detergent oil will damage the engine. Use specially formulated 4 cycle oil if at all possible.

There is a winter blend of 4 cycle oil for things like snow equipment.

Hi,
The 30 Wt used to be correct as did the non-detergent. Cannot get the non-detergent anymore except in an inferior formulation. The use of 10W30 will work in an OHV engine though Briggs does not recommend it. 5W30 is acceptable in very cold weather, I am in NC also(High Point) and we do not get that cold(Wisconsin does.)
Peace,
Clarke
