I'm 41 and really want to become an RN. What is holding me back is the math. I know basic math. Here in Arizona you need to pass College Algebra in order to get into nursing school. I checked with Sylvan... they don't teach adults. Should this stop me? I'm about half way down with my pre-reqs, but that math issue scares me very much.

I would be an excellent nurse. How would I even begin to teach myself the math I need to know?

Tech schools offer the algebra classes you need. They also have tutors to help you at no cost. Don't let this stop you. Good nurses are desperatly needed. Good luck.

DO NOT under any circumstances take a class with your piers during the day. Do night classes only at another school if you have to and transfer the credits.

Someone needs to make learning math fun for you. I can guess. You need to know what a cc is, a ml is, a unit is. Farenheiht goes out the window. It's kg and Celsius.

If you knew how x math concept was applicable for your degree you would eat it up.

Ok here is a problem: The medication is prescribed as 1 does of 0.08 mg/kg and the person weighs 80 kg, how much medicine do they get?

Here is another:

What does "Sig: 1 T (with a dot over it) bid" mean?

The answer is 6.4 mg, then you may have to turn it into ml. Don't let that discourage you, you won't even learn this until you are accepted to nursing school. That's called Math for Nurses, and it is actually very easy and very fun compared to the algebras.

Girl don't let it stop you. I was 38 and couldn't add 2+2 without my shoes and socks on!! Basic and Intermediate Algebra was hard, but College Algebra was a breeze. I even tutor it now.

Get yourself a good tutor, they are wonderful!
