I believe the female stays in heat for 2 weeks.

The cycle is most often between 18 and 21 days. Your friend will REALLY need to watch the male carefully, as he will take any and all opportunities to mount her. You may have to crate the female to keep the male away for at least this amount of time.

Also, your friend should be with her at all times when she is outside. Other males will smell her scent for quite a distance, and will even jump a tall fence to get to her. Your friend is probably going to want to pull his hair out, because there will be a lot of whining going on, because the male will get frustrated.

Thank you for being a responsible pet owner. I hope you are getting the male neutered, and the female spayed at the same time. They will both have fewer health problems, such as cancer, among other things, that can result in large vet bills. They also will have fewer behavioural problems.

Good luck to your friend. Tell him to really keep a good eye on both of them for the next three weeks. Any contact at all will likely end up with your female being pregnant.

Wow Starby, looks like you've made some enemies who don't know how to use this site. Don't you love people who don't read the rules even though they agreed to them?

Just so you all know, Starby is correct, do your research before offering advice and disagreeing with others for their accurate information. We can't all be right, and posting your "opinion" instead of fact in a case like this, isn't helpful but harmful.

The "Heat" Cycle (http://www.petbitsforyou.com/heat_cycle.html)

The above link will explain the heat cycle of dogs.

Binkydodle08. Both you and your friend Eileen need to read the rules and regulations of this site, because it is obvious you have not read them, and don't know how to use disagrees or agrees. (greenies and reddies) Reddies are only to be used for factually incorrect information, information that is detrimental to the OP, name calling and such. It is against the rules of this site to give random reddies just because you feel like it. Binkydoter, I also believe that you have signed up under a different user name. I will report this.

Well, actually she DOES know it all so this is a compliment. "Star" even figured out the agree/disagree feature and can defend her posts.

This is the help desk, not the guess desk.

Eileen and Binky, if you cannot give accurate info and cannot follow the rules of this site, then please go "play" somewhere else.

We all make mistakes, but, if you're proven to be incorrect then at least be adult enough to accept that you guessed wrong and move on. If you can't do that then you don't belong here.

When it comes to threads like this, it's easy to do research before posting an answer. If you can't be bothered to do the research then don't answer the thread. It really is that simple.

If you are guessing than state that you are.

Having said that, please go to the link below and read the rules and regs of this site before continuing. Thank you.
