Hi,
I just installed windows server 2003 enterprise edition in my dell dimension 4700 on a second partion of the HD, the first partition has xp pro with all working drivers (it uses the ntel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection, v.7.1.12.0, A00 driver). But the following drivers have yellow marks in device manager on the server2003 partiton:
* Ethernet Controller
*Multimedia Audio Controller
*PCI modem
*SM Bus Controller
*Unknown device
The video driver was also there but I downloaded the video driver for this model computer for xp and it installed fine. However, the network drivers do not get installed. Please help me find the compatible ethernet driver which is the most important I believe.
Any input is well appreciated thank you.

Drivers for all of the devices can be found either on Dell's website (http://www.dell.com) in the support section for your operating system (Windows Server 2003 E.E.), or by visiting the web site of the manufacturer of each individual device. Recommended driver installation order is motherboard chipset (should take care of SMBus and perhaps unknown device), ethernet, audio, modem. Since the Dimension 4700 wasn't sold by Dell with Windows Server 2003 EE pre-installed, you will only find drivers listed for Windows XP on Dell's site which should generally work OK, however there may be better drivers specifically for Windows Server 2003 E.E. available from the individual hardware device vendors.

I was able to install all drivers except the audio and pci modem drivers. I'm not good at finding vendors for devices, could you please tell me how I can find out who the vendor is for the audio and pci modem device that comes in the dell dimension 4700? Thank you.

The XP driver for audio listed on Dell's site is for Analog Devices (the vendor) 198x (product model series) integrated audio (chip on motherboard). If that driver doesn't work, there may be a generic reference driver for that chip at Analog Device's website (http://www.analog.com). The exact chip number can often be determined by finding the chip on the motherboard and reading the information on the chip. The service documentation at Dell's site should have a pictorial overview of component locations on the motherboard.
There are several XP drivers listed on Dell's site for modems that shipped with the Dimension 4700s. The simplest methods for determining which one it is are looking...
...at the invoice or documentation that came with the computer. Dell's site may also indicate this by entering the computer's service tag code and referring to the original system configuration as shipped.
...at the modem in the computer and reading the label.
...up the FCC ID imprinted on the modem at FCC ID search (https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/GenericSearch.cfm).

I found some more info on the audio driver and modem driver with the yellow marks on device manager:
modem: ven_8086 devid_1080
driver: intel(R) 537ep v9x df pci modem
provider intel Corporation
driver version: 2.15.25.0
location: pci slot2 (pci bus3, device 1, function 0)
audio:
driver providefr: analog devices
version: 5.12.1.5246
ven_8086 device id: 266e
name: multimedia audio controller
I'm searching the analog devices site but can't find a generic driver, stll hunting. As for the modem Intel coorporation says they don't provide drivers for the 537ep chipset family and to contact the manufacturer of the modem, which I still have to find out.
Also, I tried all the drivers at dell's site for the modem using the service tag: 5nd8w61 but none work, and one says it can only install on xp or newer versions and won't install on this server2003 OS. Still trying to figure this one out. Thanks for all your help.

Don't bother, I looked, they don't provide one and instead refer you to Dell. If the one on Dell's site doesn't work, you're out of luck unless you can find another system manufacturer that uses the same motherboard and provides drivers or one of the driver repository sites has archived one.
...manufacturer of the modem, which I still have to find out.
Pull the modem and lookup the FCC ID. I suspect Dell is your only source for drivers for this device too.

Hi,
Since I have xp pro on the other partition I just went to every driver under C:\dell\drivers and try to install each one on each missing driver. The third last on the list was the audio and the very last was for the pci modem. Now, I had downloaded this same ones from dell's site for this dimension PC but wouldn't install. Somehow, going to device manager and reinstalling the driver and picking the location (the other xp partition) works, but not if I pick the location in the server2003.
Hope this helps any one with this issue. I have audio, and the pci modem driver yellow mark is gone. God bless every one! This is a wrap!
