Are there any tips on trying to chose a company name?

Hi again, crystala!

One thing that I think is very important in choosing a name for a company, is what the perspective of the potential clients and/or customers are going to think about the company simply because of the name that the company has.

A name of a company can simply be a person's name and then what they do. For instance, Crystala's Cleaning Service. Okay, that says basically who you are and what you do. However, it's not in any way out of the ordinary or something that can stand out from the competition. Using descriptive words in the name such as "Absolute", "Perfection" or others that are somewhat unusual can help a business to stand out from the rest.

If a business name is used in advertising that's in some sort of print media where things are listed alphabetically and if there's also a lot of competition for the kind of service that you might provide, having a name that goes more toward the beginning of the list of businesses can also be helpful.

Thanks!

I would suggest that you choose a name that will resonate and be unique but not cutsey. A name that will be easily remembered that relates to what you do.

For example; I also own a cleaning company and two others that are closely related to commercial cleaning. The name consists of three words and we have promoted the three first letters from the name every time we respond to a client and even on our letterhead. Now most refer to us with just these three letters and it is VERY easy to remember... but that is in reality in the marketing aspect.

The name chosen has to do with the environment and also implies that we are more than a "cleaning company." I guess that we were a little ahead of the trend in that the environment and "green cleaning" is much more important now. From my personal experience, I was the VP of sales for a large cleaning company some time ago that covered about six states. The owner had a bit of an ego and he insisted that the company continue to have his name in the title. As we grew and became more professional we took on much larger accounts and more prolific clients. We tried to tell him that we needed a name that said much more about us and was at a professional level, he was the boss and he didn't agree. We were successful in general, but myself and the other VP of Operations always felt that we could have had much more business if the name wasn't "Hank's Cleaning Company" (not the company's real name).

Possibly you should ask posters to suggest names for you... that may give you a few new ideas...
