View Full Version : Foul smell inside - fan on soil pipe?

Hello,

I'm just looking for ideas please. I manage some ski properties. One has a problem with a smell, I'm guessing from sewage system.

I'm guessing that there must be a leak in the soil pipes somewhere for the smell to come out of. I can't do any proper work to fix these, I just need a quick something to fix it for the moment. The owners put a long chimney on the vent from the septic tank (as the vent is always covered in snow). This did nothing, but one idea I had was to put an inline duct fan on this pipe to det some flow of air along it. This way air will go into wherever the leak is within the chalet, not out of it, so the building should not smell as much.

Is that a ridiculous idea? Might it help? Any other ideas at all?

All suggestions would be most gratefully received, I'm at my wits end with useless owners who will not fix the real problem, so I just need something to survive with for the next month or so.

Many thanks,

Phil.

Where are the batrooms vented and if up through the roof is the bathroom vnt covered in snow? Be real careful on power venting. One is it might push air the wrong way and screw up the naturai vents to kitchen and bathrooms. Can you give me some better details on vents for bathrooms/ kitchen and how is the building laid out. Is there a basement. Is the soil line accesable? Need more info to possibly help and for others to help you

Thanks so much for your response, I do appreciate it.

I'd not thought about the roof vents. I'm not sure off the top of my head but I shall find out tomorrow! I'll go up for a look, if they are covered then I'll try and clear them and go from there.

Thanks again and I'll be back soon when I've looking into that.

Phil.
