Dear Stupid. You didn't say what state/country you are in. Each locality has different rules that they play by. You could pay the fine and not have a record but until we know where you are located, it's just a guess on our part here.

I am going to guess you are in Canada? The reason is you are waiting for a letter, to tell you when to go get fingerprinted and photo and be given a court date .
* my guess***
But yes, in GA and TN where I have worked with the legal system, shoplighting is a criminal offence and will be on your record unless you get into a progrom of some sort to get the charges droped after doing probation.

I would get an Attorney to handle this - you don't want to finish Nursing School and be unable to pass the ethics part of the Licensing process.
I wouldn't believe/trust anyone as far as what will or will not appear on your record or how long it will be there. If there's a fine, there's an arrest record, whether you were ticketed or marched off in handcuffs.
Get it taken care of now and be 100% sure what the outcome is.
