Greetings,
I'm hoping someone here can help me figure out what might be going on with my plumbing or what in the world might be causing this smell.
I'll be as descriptive as I can. A couple months ago I purchased my home. It was built in 1975 and I am the third owner. Originally the garage was detached from the house, however the previous owner attached the garage to the house and then finished the area above the garage to become the Master Bedroom and Master Bath. In the "Main" area of the house there are 2 and a half baths. 2 full baths upstairs and a half bath downstairs. The Master Bathroom that was added on above the garage has a full bath.
The house is well and septic (Not city sewer/water).
Well... ever since my wife and I moved in I've noticed this horrible sewage smell around the property. For the life of me, I could NOT figure out where on the property the smell was coming from. Sometimes it seemed to blow in on the wind from the west, other times from the North. It was fairly faint... but definitely a horrible sewage smell. I thought maybe it was the septic but it had been recently pumped and if I wandered there near the septic tank... I didn't notice the smell any stronger at all. It doesn't smell any 'worse' if it rains heavy or if the groudn is saturated.
In addition, I noticed that when I run water from the fawcett in that Master Bathroom I mentioned above, it smells the Same as the back yard. Its not a hyrdrogen sulfide smell... its a sewage smell in the water from that fawcett. If I leave the water run for a while... it seems to go away a bit. I do not, however, notice the smell in the shower. Just from that fawcett.
So then, one day I'm up on the roof above the Master Bedroom/Master Bath checking a skylight and the whole roof up their just REEKS of that sewage smell. I track the smell to a white piece of pipe sticking out of the roof about 12 inches above the rooftop. I'm guessing that is some sort of vent.
Well... I had found the smell... THAT was the smell and it was awful. That explained why I had such a hard time walking around the property tracking down the smell... I was looking DOWN and it was coming from my roof... being carried by the wind. My neighbors must hate me.
So... any idea what in the world might be going on? Any idea how I can fix it or if its something simple that could be easily fixed? Am I going to need to call in a plumber?
Thanks in advance!
