It include the genus, which is capitalized, and the species name, which is not.
So for a human being, the species name is Home sapiens.
BOTH should be in italics.
For a cat, it is Felis catus.
For a California poppy, Eschscholzia californica.
People often get this wrong in print, so don't be confused by websites and newspapers that have it different.
