Hi I hope someone can help me because I am lost.

I have 2 brand new baseboard heaters(1500w) and they are controlled by a UPM digital thermostat(also new) These were install by an electrician last year and until today no problems.

Today I am preparing to lay a new floor and I stood one of the heaters up to clean around it and it fell over. When it hit there ground there was a flash of sparks from the end were the wires are not connected and I noticed there was no display on the thermostat. After checking and resetting all breakers I noticed the heaters putting out all kinds of heat but there is no display on the thermostat, therefore I cannot set my temp. I opened up both heaters and nothing seems out of the ordinary. WHAT DO I DO?

Thanks in advance

I think the fall of the baseboard heat caused wires to short out briefly inside the heater, which damaged the wall stat, that is now closed permanently, keeping the heat on.

Shut off the circuit breaker for the heat to keep it from running wild.

Replace the thermostat with a new unit. The old one is probably damaged beyond repair, as there is nothing that can be done to save it.

What concerns me is the heat, something in there shorted out, may be OK now, look closely for arc damage. I feel there is a problem lurking inside one of the wiring compartments.

If nothing can be found, I think it is worth the safety of you and your loved ones just replacing the heat also.

Re-reading your question,

there was a flash of sparks from the end were the wires are not connected .

What wires not connected?

Is this the cable feeding the heat?

Again, if these wires connected together, there was a short that damaged the stat.

Sorry about being unclear. The heater sparked at the end where the wire from the wall was not connected. Where the thermostat would go on the baseboard heater. I checked for arc damage and all is good. I replaced the thermostat and it is working perfectly. From what I am told those digital thermostats are designed to blow like that if there is ever a problem. Good to know I guess.

Thanks for the response
