I have a 1989 honda accord SE I. I have had 2 mechanics look at it--both say the engine is gone: one said something about the rings. He suggested buying a used engine to put in it. Said it would be cheaper than a rebuild. The other mechanic, at the dealership, said the same thing--not specificly the rings. Dealership offered me a used engine with 100K miles for $2900 installed. I thought was high. I can find used engines from $200-1000+. Is it worth putting money into this car? Has about 167,000miles. PW, pdl, at, power sunroof, bose stereo, ac--all work fine. The interior needs work. Trying to decide whether to keep the car or get rid of it.

In this market, I think you should be able to negotiate a better deal. Also, consider the shape of the current transmission--has it been well-maintained or not. If not, it's life expectancy is not very great.

Start using full-synthetic engine oil and premium filters (e.g. Purolator Pure One) and you should be able to get 350,000 miles from a Honda. Do the same for the transmission.

If you replace the engine, ensure the replacement is the same engine you have; otherwise, major electrical compatibility problems arise.
