Previous home owner had a vent fan in a powder room (no shower/bath) that was not ducted anywhere. Went straight into the insulation in the framing. Ive removed all the drywall (found some mold) and am wondering if I should just remove the fan or if I should duct it properly. Im thinking that without the moisture of a shower I can do without it and remove the wiring as well. Any thoughts?

This exhaust fan should not be needed and can therefore probably be eliminated entirely. You must eliminate the wiring as you indicated as well.

Is there a window in this powder room... just curious? Also wondering how mold got up in the ceiling... any ideas?

No windows but I think the roof leaked at one time. Have a new roof now so mold should be taken care of. I keep finding mouse holes in the attic and trying to figure out how to keep them out

Hire a cat... lol Just kidding.

To tap off the wiring you can separate it from the fixture and install a junction box with a lid,that way,if at sometime you change your mind and want a fan,the power is still right there.

The fan should stay and be vented to the outside in most areas it is a code requirement,
The mold may be from the moisture taken in from the existing fan.
To keep the mice out you need to check the entire house for small voids where they can get in

This is a half-bath. Code does not require an exhaust fan in a half-bath anywhere I know of..?

Of course, now adays they do require an exhaust fan EVEN IF A WINDOW IS PRESENT in all 3/4 and full bathrooms... at least in my area.

Let me know if exhaust fan required in your area for a half-bath will you..?
