I am going through my first cycle of IVF. I had 2 very good quality embryos transferred on 11/22. Over the past few days I have taken multiple hpt's that are supposed to read levels of hCG down to 40mIU/ml and all have been positive. This morning I had my first beta hcg test and the level was only 18. Since then I have taken 2 more hpt's and both are positive. How is it that the hpt's are coming up positive if they aren't supposed to detect anything below 40? I have had minimal spotting and a little bit of cramping all of which is supposed to be normal for IVF. I am going back in on Monday for another blood test but don't want to go through the weekend wondering how this could be.

Which hpts are you taking? Was the first positive hpt before the beta hcg test?

The tests may have been more sensitive than they indicated. Fertility meds you used during the IVF process can sometimes effect hcg levels.
Your next levels will tell you more... sometimes they rise quite slowly and all is still well as there can be a pretty wide range as to what constitutes normal at any given time. Wishing you rising levels on Monday!
