View Full Version : Hampton Bay remote doesn't turn on light

I am in need of assistance, if possible. I recently bought a Hampton Bay Windward II ceiling fan from Home Depot. I installed the fan according to the instructions. With the wall switch turned "on", the fan light comes on and the fan begins spinning; however, the remote will operate the fan and all the fan's features (forward/reverse/speed control/temp setting), but when pressing the button for the light function the remote will not turn "on or off" the light. The only way to control the light function is from the wall switch. But that will turn the unit off entirely.

Needless to say, it's very annoying to have the light on during the day when I just want to use the fan. I went to Home Depot to replace the remote. The replaced remote did not fix the problem. I changed dip settings, but that didn't work either.

Is it my wiring? What am I doing wrong?

These fans have a remote and light built in, so I don't believe the problem would be anything you did-- did you have to wire the receiver in place? If so how did you wire it? If not, I presume you have a defective fan.

I didn't have to install any additional pieces or devices except the motor to the ceiling and the light fixture to the motor. A simple, straitforward wiring was done by matching like colored wires.

It's possible (but unlikely) you wired something incorrectly. The light should have a black and white wire that connect to a blue and white wire inside the housing. The fan should have a black and white wire that connect to the black and white wire from your ceiling. Was there any more involved with it than that?

Otherwise, sounds like a defective fan. It is still under warranty with Hampton Bay if you take it back to the store.

I have the same problem with my Hampton Bay Windward II 54" ceiling fan. I've had the fan for almost three years now and it worked fine via the remote until approximately one month ago. Now the remote controls the fan correctly, but the light will not operate from the remote.

Doing some research I found that this particular model is built by King of Fans (http://www.kingoffans.com/Support.htm). Apparently there are issues with the fan receiver failing. I have not gotten through to customer service yet (1-800-330-3267) but I plan on trying again on Monday.

If you have luck resolving your issue I would like to hear about it -- I'll update this thread if I'm successful.

Just take the entire fan back to Home Depot for a replacement under warranty. If they'll let you, exchange it for a Hunter fan. Hampton Bays are garbage.

I called King of Fans and received the replacement receiver -- it was easy enough to install even though they didn't include any directions... you have to remove the top part of the fan motor housing and you'll immediately see the receiver inside, it's held on by two screws and then the ground has an additional screw. Replacing that with the new one resolved my problems and all of the functions on the remote work great.

The replacement receiver was $40 including shipping and since my fan was no longer under warranty this was a much cheaper option.

Hampton Bay fans have a lifetime warranty.
