Black and white from the cable go to the black and red from the heater. Colors don't matter.

Re-mark the white wire to any color other than green or grey on both ends with a Sharpie marker.

What about the ground wire? Does the #10-2 have a green or bare wire?

Be sure to connect it to the green screw found inside the wiring compartment on the water heater.

If the cable has metal sheathing, be sure to use a proper cable connector, as this will act as the ground.
