I know it sounds stupid but is it illegal to let my 16 year old son drive my landrover on a field that is owned by me with me present in the passenger seat?

You may allow your child ( assuming you have full custody) drive your car on private property. Your insurance most likely would not pay if there was a accident.

14 year olds drive farm trucks around the farms all the time

Hello stan:

You don't even have to be present as long as it's on private property. But, if he goes too fast, YOU'RE the one who has to give him a ticket.

It's perfectly okay for him to drive anything on your property with or without you being in the passenger's seat. Just don't let him on the public highway without a proper driver's license though and don't have any accidents with whatever vehicle he's driving on your property.
