Please help! We're hosting Thanksgiving dinner for family & the heater in my basement does not blow hot air at all. The hetaing unit blows cool air only. I switched to A/C and it also blows cool air only. Any suggestions prior to calling repairman? In the spirit of Thanksgiving my cold houseguests will really appreciate ANY assistance!

This site is GREAT!

Yep. You likely have a heat pump and the reversing valve is stuck or has an open coil. Most probable causes. Could even be a bad thermostat, but doubtfull.

You are correct! We have a heat pump. We'll start with the long-shot & a prayer, thermostat. Any idea how much it SHOULD cost to repair revervsing valve or coil?

Thanks for the speedy response.

Coil - easy
Tstat - easy

Replace reversing valve - hard. Freon must be recycled. Valve cut out, silver soldered and re-charged. A new dryer needs to be cut out and installed too.

Troubleshooting involves checking for a change of state in the power applied to the reversing valve. If it changes state, then the coil resistance needs to be checked for an open.

Sometimes tapping the valve will work.

Can't estimate cost.

The reverse valve is probably stuck, hit it lightly with the butt of a screw driver and hope it get loose, also check to see if there is a fuse by the auxiliary heat side, make sure that is good, and always reset all breakers to the unit first before you do any thing else.
