Hey,

I have a Marilyn Monroe movie called "Some Like It Hot" and it's a movie on a reel... I would appreciate if anyone would comment back with the estimated value of this antique is.

Thanks.

Hi, xkronex!

I know that you say that it's on a reel, but just for clarification, is this on one, great big reel like you might find being played horizontally in a movie theater or on a number of smaller ones, please?

Also, if it is on just one reel, is it something that you're currently able to play at home?

Thanks!

Hey Clough

Well basically there are two reels and I its in perfect condition, I wouldn't know if it can be played at home because I don't have a device that can play it, it is in perfect condition so I assume it can be played within the confines of a home... also clough I have a lot of paintings by an artist carol wald she died in 2000 some of her painings were sold for 20,000 dollars a lot of them have prices on them maybe you can help me with this..

Thanks,

Thanks, xkronex!

What are the dimensions of the reels and how old do you think that they are, please? Reproduction film of any kind deteriorates over time. Films that may appear to be in really great shape may not be in so good a shape once you actually view what's on them. The viewing condition of the film that you have would be a better determinant as to it's value than the outward, physical appearance of it.

The deterioration of antique/vintage films has been an issue in the movie industry. I know that I have read some things about companies that have large number of vintage films storing them in what would hopefully be ideal climatic conditions in caves in order to preserve them.

My daughter worked for a number of years in a historic movie theater in California. I'm going to ask her about your film when she and I speak. We are having some problems connecting with each other recently, though.

Concerning your paintings, I would be glad to try to help you with whatever you'd like to know. But, that would need to be the subject of another thread that you could start. This thread is about the film that you have.

Just a note about them here though, the possible monetary value of a work of art or collectible of any kind that's produced by a well-known artist or is about a notable person, generally increases in value after their death. This is probably because there won't be anymore original artworks produced or living activities to be recorded in a collectible, for instance, on such things like baseball cards.

Thanks!

Clough,

I did some research on what you described as deteration of vintage reels, it appears as though you are correct:
"The deterioration that results from the buildup of gases produced by acetate".
To be quite honest I just received this remarkable piece of film from Carol Walds husband, In fact I have a lot of antiques from them that have been very well preserved if you ask me.

I have old newpaper clippings from 1890's - 1940's, African Masks and a whole lot of other stuff as well, everything is in tip top shop and I would assume that mrs Wald would have known about this deteriation and would have preserved the film accordingly.

Lets say the film can play and it hasn't deteriated, if you could find out the net value of this piece that would be remarkable.

Again thanks a lot for looking into this for me and replying to my thread in sequence, you have been a great help.

Sincerely,

xkronex.

Hi again, xkronex!

Thanks and you're welcome!

If you start separate threads about what you need to know about, we'll do our best here to help you. We don't guarantee results, but we can try! At least you'd be getting "live" help here unlike you would on most other sites.

Images of what you have would be great! Posting images and also starting item-specific threads really helps to continue to make this site one of the best question and answer sites on the Internet!

You've really piquéd my interest the more that you talk about what you have! Are there any coins or musical instruments of any kind?

Thanks!
