I am running 2006 Quickbooks. Whenever I send my Accountant my books to do my quarterlies, she sends me back a .qbm file and I perform the following steps:

1) Download it to computer (i.e. desktop).
2) Open Quickbooks
3) Click on "File"
4) Click on "Portable Company File"
5) Click on "Open a File"
6) In the section titled "Get Portable Company File From" - click "Browse", Look In "Desktop" find the filename that I sent you, click on it
7) In the section titled "Name and Location of New Company File" - select where you want to restore it to
8) Click open

Then I receive the following error message:

"QuickBooks cannot open this file because it is not a vlid QuickBooks portable company file"

Any suggestions on what is going on?

Thanks - rockymount

Sounds like your accountant has a newer version of QB then you do. With just about any software a newer version can load the older versions but the older versions cannot load the newer ones. Compare your version to the one your accountant uses. If you have different versions she will either need to save the file in the older format or you will need to upgrade.

Or it is possible that the file got corrupted. If that is the case she should still have the original file and you can try to transfer it again.
