IUD's effects are often case/model specific so the best thing would be to speak to your gynaecologist who put it in for you. I think the idea is that your hormones return to normal after several months, up to a year. Unfortunately, the IUD may not be effective at all so there's no guarantee. My partner and I had 2 pregnancies with 2 different IUD's. The first pregnancy occurred after she had been using the IUD for 2 years. We were pretty upset about this, and the gynaecologist suggested a different model of IUD, but the same thing happened about a year later. The risks of keeping a pregnancy with an IUD in are too high for us, and the pregnancy was terminated when the doc removed the IUD. The second pregnancy resulted in a misscarriage in the 1st trimester before we even knew were pregnant. So to answer your question, it really depends on your physiology and your body's reaction to the device. As far as I know your periods should return to a normal monthly cycle when your hormones have reset themselves after removal of the IUD, so that might be an indicator for you.
