I own a 2000 Ford Taurus, with the 3.0L Duratec Engine. Being familiar with the AX4N transmission, there's not much you will be able to do. Ford will install a rebuilt transmission ($2,500) with a 12-month warranty.
Next time around, my advice is to be sure to drop and clean the pan, change the transmission filter, and refill with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF every 30,000 miles. FWD automatic transmissions need good preventive maintenance or they won't last long.
