View Full Version : Electrical Wiring of Hot Tub

I have a project in condo, where my client wants me to provide the wire for his hot tub (50amp-4 wires) in the balacony of his last floor. In this balacony there is a small room as a furnace room that its door controls from outside and also I have to run all 3/4" pvc conduit from main panel in the basement to the 4th floor from outside wall. Now I have two question regarding the above-mentioned case:

1- I am going to run two wires #6 (hot), one wire #10(N), and one #10 as ground wire.

2- I am going to install 50amp GFCI disconnect breaker box inside of the furnace room, where is almost 10' far from of hot tub.

Please let me know if two above plan is right or not.

Check the instructions for the spa. I highly doubt #10 is enough for the ground and neutral.

As long as the disconnect is within sight of the tub you are fine. Inside a separate room might be a problem. I would let your inspector make this call.

I can tell you one thing. You are going to regret that 3/4" conduit. 1' would have been a MUCH better choice.

The neutrasl has to be #6. You also have to think about grounding the casing of the moter. I don't know much about condos but whenever you install a hot tub you must drive a ground rod I believe.

The neutrasl has to be #6.True, IF the instructions say so. If not it can typically be reduced to #8.

The motor is grounded by the circuit ground. With a package spa it is also already BONDED from the factory.

NO, a ground rod is NEVER required for a spa, hot tub or pool. Equipotential bonding has NOTHING to do with a connection to earth or to a grounding electrode.
