Add more memory.

If you tell us the exact make and model of your computer, we can tell you the type of memory you need and the MAX your computer can use.

If you want to see how much memory you have now, right-click on My Computer and select Properties. The General tab will tell you how much RAM you have. Let us know.

Download, install and run CCleaner (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ccleaner.com%2Fdownload&ei=8aYOSbxhmvSwA63D4J8P&usg=AFQjCNHAqfNC7zo7M7FkYsrUqhd0uievkQ&sig2=RcDdCVzd5XUBGrJKpYN6wQ). It's free.
First run the Cleaner tool (top left) by clicking RUN CLEANER (bottom right corner)
Next click on TOOLS on the left, then click on Startup. Go through this list and disable EVERYTHING you can identify as unnecessary. If it's related to your firewall or your antivirus, leave it alone.

If you see little "helper" programs listed for programs you use like iTunes, Realplayer, Quicktime, Adobe Acrobat...disable them anyway. They don't need to load themselves when you start the computer, they will load when you need them.

If there is anything in here you can't decide on, come back here and ask us.

Any "sharing" programs you use to share files with other people over the internet (Napster, Limewire, etc.)...disable them. Better yet, uninstall them. You're killing your computer with them.
Those are my top three suggestions.
