Found that both the condenser and evaperator coils were frozen. Have been able to thaw them out but tried to try the heat pump out again and the evaperator coils get damp and cold right away. Must be right that it is trying to run air condition system and heat system. How can we get the air conditioner to stop and only run the heat system. Is it something we can do or do we need repairman.

It could be a few different problems.

The reverse circuit in the outside unit. Sensor or board or control.

If you do not know what you are doing a call to your local HVAC company for a On Site inspection in to your problem.

Found that last people spliced a small yellow and larger orange together in the outside Unit. That did not seem normal. Think someone tried to take a short cut and didn't work. Took them apart and capped them off. It appears that we only have heat at the moment and no air thank heaven. Have someone coming at one today. To see if he can get us trough the week at the beach and then come back and replace it.
Thanks again for hanging in there with me.

Well, it's up and running. The 'Repair man" that was here before left a wire unhooked that controlled the inside unit. I did as you suggested and called a friend that I trust the most and she put me in touch with the gentleman that came and fixed it. He charged $47. The one that left it unwired was $487. Guess who gets the job. Now all I have to do is decide between a Trane XR and Trane XLi.
Must be like do you want a Catalic or Ford. Wish there was a Buick in there somewhere.
Thanks again for all your patience and help!
