Renters had a grease fire with 5000.00 damage. Renters have personal coverage. Landlord has 500.00 deductable. Landlord insurance wants to depreciate appliances burned leaving landlord with large money loss. Renters say their insurance will pay. Who's responsible. Can I deduct from damage deposit if they don't fully cover the cost.

Renters insurance should pay first since it was their fault, then the renter should pay, even out of their own pocket any amount their insurance does not pay.
Landlord or his own insurance should not have to pay anything

I 100% agree with Fr_Chuck. The landlord should not have to pay anything. This should be turned into the tenant's renter's insurance. Typically renter's insurance has a very low deductible and pays replacement cost for anything damaged - not depreciated cost.

Let us know how it turns out. It's always good for us to hear what REALLY happens - not just what's "supposed" to happen.
