I have a new 4 ton Goodman 13 seer heat pump package unit and am trying to find a new compatible thermostat. We purchased a digital one from Walmart for $20 and it worked fine for the a/c but would not work for heat. When reading the fine print on manual it said "WILL not control single-stage or multi-stage heat pumps". We have 5 wires running from system to stat (original wires used with old a/c system & electric furnace). What do we need to get to control ac & heat?

We purchased a Honeywell 3100C that says "heat pump only". Is that correct? Also, we've been asking around and have been told that we need 7 wires from stat to system instead of the 5 that we have. Is this correct?

How about a complete and accurate Honeywell model number.
