I am building a new home (2800 sf each level main and basement) and will be doing a manifold distribution system with PEX piping.

With the length of the house, I was planning on a two water heater system. Both 50 gal electric plumbed in tandem.

If this seems feasible, would I just supply the first tank with the cold water and run the outlet (hot water) into the inlet of the second tank?

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thnxs.

If this were my call I would divide the house into two sections and supply each section withi its own water heater. I can see no advantage to hooking the heaters in series. That wiuld make the first heater into a storge tank and put the load on number two if this is the one you'll be drawing from.

Let me give you a option that would save you some money. 50 gallons should handle your home but if capacity is a concern go to a 80 gallon and install a 1/2" return line from the farthest branch back to a recirculating pump.
This way you would be assured of hot water without the expense of a second heater. Good luck Tom
