I recently installed a Magnesium track light from Ikea and would like to put it on a dimmer. This model has five 12V 20W halogen lamp heads and an electronic transformer. I know that some electronic transformers are dimmable and some aren't and that those that are require a dimmer made to work with electronic transformers. The instructions that came with the track light kit didn't have any references to using a dimmer and no one at the Ikea store knew. Anyone know?

You should find this attachment helpful in chosing a dimmer.

Looks like you asked the same question at Ikeafan website:

[IKEA Spotting] Can Magnesium Track Lights be used with a dimmer? - IKEAFANS (http://www.ikeafans.com/forums/modifications/22515-can-magnesium-track-lights-used-dimmer.html)

And got no answer.

Even thou I gave an explanation from Lutron, you really should get the answer from IKEA.

If they are going to sell this stuff, they need to be ready to give answers.

This is nothing to guess at, that is why your asking the question.

Contact their customer service listed on this page;

IKEA | Customer service (http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/customer_service/splash.html)

If you do not get a definitive answer, do not dim these.

I do believe that if they could not be dimmed, the instructions would state ' Not dimmable". No reason to take a chance.

In general, when halogens are dimmed, the lifetime of the bulb decreases.
