Any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started; particularly any software or hardware that you installed or setup.

Is it not showing up in windows explorer or device mgr, or both?

Right click on My Computer on desktop and go to properties then the hard ware tab and device mgr. is there a dc/dvd rom drive heading there and a plus sign next to it? What is under plus sign when you click on it

Any yellow marks there in device mgr.

What operating system?

Did you install any cd burning/writing software recently

First thing to do is to right click on the drive that has yellow mark next to it and choose uninstall and say OK

Now close all open windows and restart PC

On restart, windows will detect drive and attempt to install drivers for it

When restarted check drive in windows to see if seen and also check device mgr to see if yellow marks is back

I also experienced the same problem and followed instruction similar to those of seahwk83, but still it did not work.

This link though proved useful:
PC Hell: How to Fix Error Code 39 with DVD or CD-ROM drive in Windows XP/Vista (http://www.pchell.com/hardware/cd_drive_error_code_39.shtml)

This then helped to solve my problem.

Thanks

Glad you found that info, that is what I would have suggested next if above did not work

The problem is usually 1 of the 2 things and you found the 2nd

Good to hear your back and working

Here is the link I refer to:

Upperfilters/LowerFilters
Follow method 2 on this link, if this does not resolve problem, the changes you may have made will not effect your computer operation in any way -
