I have a large sewage ejector pump in the basement. The sewage from the house collects in the large sump pit and gets pumped out into the sewer system. There is always some dirty water at the bottom and it has sewage in it. I would like to get rid of the odor. What can I do. Thank you for any help

If it is not air tight then you will smell sewer gas. It should be completely air tight, and vented properly. Do you have one or two pipes coming from the top of the pit? If you have two, then one is pump discharge and the other is a vent. If this is the case I would seal all openings in the pit cover.

When your fixtures drain into the pit it sets up a pressure inside the pit that's taken away by the dedicated pit vent that pushes it out, That's where your sewer gas comes from if the pit's not sealed. As the pit empties the pit vent reverses itself and pulls air into the pit. This is why the pit vent MUST be separate form the house vents. Seal the pit and your smell goes away. Good luck, Tom

Thank you both for your help. There is a separate vent for the pit but at the spot it goes outside it is bent down aiming at the ground, do you think it matters and should I turn it upward? I will seal the pit because the smells are the worst when the big pumps go off and shoot the sewage into the street

Yes turn it it upwards, or straight out, definitely shouldn't be turned down. However, I still believe the problem is in the sealing of the pit.
