My guinea pig is 9 months old (born from mother received from Santa 07). He has scaley, hard skin on his bum, is losing hair, it looks like he has dandruf. His mother has none of these symptoms, but they are in separate spaces. Went to a vet, he thinks ringworm and we have to give two different oral meds 1x daily, all in all has cost us almost $200... does this sound right? The vet is not sure it is ringworm (what we are treating for now) and if it does not improve, we will treat for mange (either demodex or sarcoplic (sp?), and it will cost more. My kids love our pigs, no other pets in our house, but I am wondering is the vet on the right track?

I'd go with the vet on this one, after all, he's a licensed vet.

Sadly I don't know the cost, if it's medication that's available wholesale I'd look into it. Many times you can get meds from Pet wholesale stores at a much lower price then the vets office. Just make sure it's the same medication.

I wish you luck, hopefully your little guinea pig will feel better soon. :)

This sounds pretty serious. I am very worried! Maybe it is best to bring him to a vet.

Does your guinea pig have a lump between its two eyes or its ears?
And is it losing hair around its eye?
