I have a question similar to the unikid's, but I am on the receiving end. I was wondering if there was any way to catch the person. Can I or the bank or officials trace the online spending he/she did. They stole almost $3000 before my bank caught it and called to ask if it was me spending the money. What will happen now?

You file a police report, you are not liable to pay the credit card bill. You let the fraud and theft department from the credit card company investigate. You will most likely never hear about it

But will they be able to catch the person... cause I know if they used it in stores that they can look at cameras. But this one was all online. I would like to know what happens. How would I make sure that I know.

Once you report it, you probably won't get much information unless and until they capture the perp. That's a big IF and WHEN.

You won't really be out anything once the credit card reimburses you the fraudulent charges.

It doesn't matter to you if they "catch" the person or not - the credit card company takes over and it's out of your hands once you file the report. My husband's card was used when he was in the hospital and I did everything I could think of, including having my Attorney write letters to the credit card company because I had a suspicion who was using the card. The credit card company refused to release the info.

So whether they do or don't, it really doesn't matter.

I do know that they pulled IP addresses, the street addresses where the merchandise was delivered, that type of info, and it took a very long time but the person WAS arrested. I had to fill out the papers at the very beginning that it wasn't me, that it wasn't my husband, that we had no knowledge and there's a very strong warning that if you yourself used the card and are now denying it, it is a Federal crime. The did not require me to notify the Police because I had no idea when it was taken - or how "they" got it (although, as I said, I had my suspicions).

When you file the report with the company you file under penalty of perjury.

Can they, yes they can if they want to, they can check to where items purchases were shipped to, they can check IP addresses of the person who was ordering the items.

So can they track the person, yes not really that hard, will they, that is up to the credit card company and the local police.

In fact for example you and unikid have the same IP address from a educational institution. And I could go on and on if you wanted me to.

So yes it is easy to trace people online if you want to. Talk to some of the computer science kids on campus they will tell you.

So I know they can do it. But why won't they tell me who it is? And why wouldn't they go after the person? Don't they want they're money back?

There is no purpose in telling you - what are you going to do about it that they and the Police can't do - ?

And you don't know they aren't going after the person - maybe they haven't made their move yet.

And as far as their money - once you report the card stolen it's their ballgame and that decision is up to them.
