I live on a farm. Both hot and cold water are supplied from the bore hole. There is a gass heater for the hot water. My shower has separate hot and cold taps. Both taps work just fine on their own, but when I try to adjust the temperature by turning on the hot or cold tap, there is a loud hammering noise at a certain point. Beyond this point the hammering stops and there is only cold water. The bath and kitchen mixers work perfectly, as does the shower in a cottage next to the main house, which has the same water supply. What must I do to have a normal shower?

You may have a loose washer on the hot side. Turn main water off, and dissasemble the hot side of the faucet. There is most likely a flat rubber washer on the end. If this is loose, it will create a hammer sound, also would explain loss of hot water when cold water is on. Please let me know what you find. Also brand and model of faucet would be helpful.

Thanks for the advice. I too was so sure this was the cause of my problem, but on ismantling the ta (faucet) I found it all in good working order. It is a Cobra brand tap. Thanks again for your advice and if you have any further thoughts, I would be very grateful for your input.
