Is there a trick to this - I cannot get the cartridge all the way in

No trick use some plumber's grease and apply some force, what is the model Number of your faucet, Thanks.

As Afaroo suggests, make sure you grease the "O" rings. If not, you will clip them and you will have to do it all over again...
