Well I don't know much about the emo label but what I think is annoying people these days is that serious mental illnesses, like cutting is being used like some sort of popular trend? "emo" is very counfusing to me. Is it some kind of music too? I really don't get it:confused:

EMO is short for emotional. And it is seriously stereotyped. It's sad.

Yeah, it's like the new, chic version of Goth- minus the death metal.

Hi, chaosxonxice!

Yes, Emo is a genre and/or style of music.

Emo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo)

It's also something that has evolved into a sub-culture that involves a number of things like ways to dress, styles of hair, make-up, mannerisms, ways to live, etc.

Momma, I did find a definition on the following site that I will quote below. Thanks for metioning emotional. I had no idea about there being a connection with emotions!

emo Definition - The Unword Dictionary (http://www.unwords.com/unword/emo.html)

1. (n.) Abbreviated from "emotive hardcore", relating to a genre of music coined due to a band's usage of emotional and personal lyrics.

Emo lost its genuine meaning years ago. Its basically a vague stereo-type, so vague now, you never know who is going to be considered "emo". Usually lots of make-up, spiky hair, piercings, skinny jeans. But the reason its so vague is lots of people may have the combination of either or whatever, so if you wear skinny jeans are you automatically "emo"? That's where the stereo-type is pointless. You can't group people together, "Okay your preps, your goth, your jocks, your emo." Its dumb because there might be lots of "jocks" who cut themselves or "preps" who are depressed.

It's a pointless stereo-type that I don't think can be taken seriously as a real word at all. It could mean anything and could be a title given to any person at random.

Emo is a mixture of punk goth and grunge

Most people have a different idea of what emo is.

My friends seem to use the term Emo as a joke.

Emo has more than one meaning, It stands for emotional, such as suicidal, but is often used to refer to people of the gothic look. Its sad for those people to be called emo, making sport of a serious problem. Ignorance unfortunately is growing in many ways. Lets hope for better times.

Emo:

Music: Simple Plan *one of the first bands in the genre*, My Chemical Romance, Good Charlotte... all been branded emo.

Style: goth/grunge/punk- dark hair, with reds and pinks and greens, skinny jeans, chains, usually all black, however, reds, and pinks occasionally, are used as well. Black make up is also very common.

"Emo" clothing is now more a trend then ever. Anything that has a skull on it, that has a punk-esque look to it is considered emo.

Originally, "emo" kids were described, as emotionally battered people who took shelter in their genre of dress, make up, and music. Now however, the stereotype, and general trend in most tweens, and teens, is its "angsty teenagers" looking to rebel against society. Which ironically, they are conforming to a ridiculously overdone, stereotyped look. Emo is no longer really something that exists, its more like an unintended mockery of what it was originally.

The cutting associated with emo, is more or less a stereotype, however lots of younger people use the "emo" genre as a scapegoat. "I cut myself because everyone thinks I'm emo" or "I cut myself because it gets me attention" are some the cliché phrases that came from all this.

Okay. I want to clear something. Emo today usually means they cut. I say that because I am. It is just like goth but emo slits wrists, and cuts themselves to let pain out.
