I am looking for anyone's experience with wood pellet stove's. I live in norther Manitoba were it gets down to -40 in the winter. My house is 2100 sq/ft and I am wondering if it is efficient to burn wood pellets. Here are some questions I have:
Does any one know how many pounds you can expect to burn per day on average in this climate?
Is there a maximum distance you can run the exhaust pipe to the outside?

Basically I am trying to figure out if it is worth my while to invest in a stove to help heat my house. I currently use baseboard hot water heat which runs on electricity. We pay 0.061 cents/KWH for power.

Any insight would be great.

Actually your local stove dealer will have the answers for you since they deal in your area and have had to answer these questions before.

The maximum distance for the exhaust pipe as you call it will be different for each stove manufacturer. I suggest you visit some stove manufactures web sites and look at there install instructions to give you a better and much more accurate estimate of the distance allowed.

You will need the following info to supply to your stove dealer so they can figure your pellet burn rate.

Insulation value for the entire home
Window type/style, R value and facing direction. NES or W.
Single or two story construction etc.
All of this info is needed to calculate a heat loss figure so they can calculate the average burn rate per day.
