First, let me say I'm plumbing challenged, so I hope I can explain this correctly. The Moen tub faucet with diverter that was installed new in my new house 7 years ago has broken. I went to the store to buy a new one but can't find a similar one anymore. The broken one has a 3/4" attachment (according to the Lowe's guy) and the newer ones are all 1/2" attachments. The end of the pipe that comes out of the wall where I will attach the faucet has a round 3/4" threaded metal piece on it that I can't undo. I think there is plumbers putty on it and I don't know how to get it off. Just past the metal piece there is a PVC nut that appears to be glued on.
My questions: Is there anywhere to get a Moen faucet just like I have? Failing that, how do I remove metal attachment that has the plumbers putty on it and will that then work with new faucet.
I would appreciate any help. Again, sorry if this isn't very clear!

Are you speaking of the tub valve, (where you turn the water on and off) or the tub spout, where the water comes out?

Take the old spout to a plumbing supply house and show them what you have. I am sure that they can give you what you need or at least give you the advice you need.

Can you post a photo of the faucet?
But in the interim: I would call Moen. They have pretty good customer service.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried the local Lowe's and I don't have many other choices where I live, but there is a contractor supply place that may be able to help. And, to answer Harold, it's the faucet.

Oops, Harold, meant to say it's the spout.

For a selection of diverter spouts to fit your tub click on; 3/4" threaded diverter spout - Google Product Search (http://www.google.com/products?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLJ_enUS270US271&q=3/4%22+threaded+diverter+spout&um=1&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title)
These will fit your 3/4" stub-out. Good luck, Tom

Sounds like you have 1/2 PVC piping with a threaded PVC adapeter and a 3/4"metal bushing. The bushing stayed on the adapter when you removed the tub spout. See pic. Can you show us a picture of the pipe with the spout removed. If I am correct you should be able to remove the bushing. Spouts are generic and does not have to be Moen.

That is it exactly! I have a picture I took with my phone to show someone at Lowe's and I'll have to see if I can get it on my computer. But you are right. The bushing seems to be held pretty firmly with what I think is plumbers putty. I've tried to undo it with a wrench but can't get it to budge. What will remove the plumbers putty?
Thanks,
Lauren
