Hello, I am replacing a 4 wire fan switch in a ceiling fan and I don't know where the wires go. On the back of the switch is marked L, 1, 2, 3. There's a black, tan, blue & yellow wire. Which wires go where? Thanks, Phil

Did you do the unthinkable and remove the old switch without identifying the wiring pattern? If so, all you can do is follow the switch mfrs instructions. The only real clue lies with the one marked L for line that one receives the HOT or FEED wire.

Thanks hedlok, I'm trying to fix someone's botched up job The switch instructions say the same thing you did... look at the wiring pattern before removing wires. Only thing, there was no switch. Is the black wire the hot one?

For fans usually there is a black wire for fan feed and a blue wire for the light feed. There may be a color coded diagram inside the cover or you could go to a supplier and ask for a wiring diagram for that model fan or try online, perhaps the mfrs website.

Try:

L - White (tan), 1- Black, 2 - Blue, 3 - Yellow
