Can anyone tell me the meaning of the word, it's origins etc?

We play many sports against our local insular rivals and these matches are termed "Murrattis". I can find no meaning of the word during web searches or in English or French dictionaries. The only use I have come across is as a name. Anyone shed some light?

Nice try Rick, but that is not what I'm after. I want to know why, what or who was/is Muratti. Over the weekend I have come across references to Muratti Cigarettes, maybe something to do with that. Still in the dark though.

I reckon I have found the answer, took a fair amount of searching but this is the best I can do... Muratti Cigarettes now part of Philip Morris Int. were the sponsors of the Muratti Vase. Tobacco advertising used to be quite prevalent in sport certainly locally and in F1 to a certain extent still. Anyhow unless someone comes up with something better that's where it stops. Cheers all.

The race for the Muratti Vase/Cup was held by the Manchester Wheelers cycling club for many years before and after the 2nd World War. The Vase still exists in it's 4th version. Winners of the vase on 3 occasions kept the trophy. See web site. AHB

My great aunt worked for Murrattis inManchester and later at home in Dunham Massey, hand rolling the cigarettes for the Company whilst in-semi retirement.This would be about 1950.
