OK, so I live in Washington state, and I was down on my luck and had no money or a place to stay, So a friend let me stay and we had a very vague verbal agreement, We agreed the I could stay in his extra room, until I got on my feet again, and I could just start paying rent when I could, and over the three months I gave him about 200$, which is all I could manage along with digging myself out of a whole I put myself in. He has now gone and hired a lawer to get 2 grand from me, Can he do this? He was helping me out and did this too me, and he knew I had no money and still opened his home to me

If what your saying is completely true, then I think your friend is a complete . Unfortunately if he does take you to court, the court will see that it was his place and you were staying there. But if there is no written contract or anything of that nature you may be all right. If I were you I'd get some legal advise of my own. Call legal aid, it's a free service. Good luck! He will get bad carma for doing this selfish act, but you can turn your carma around by not being like that and helping someone else out. No matter how bad off we think we are, there's always someone whose got it worse and it could be as close as your neighbor.

Unfortunately, this case may go either way.

A verbal agreement is binding in some situations and in some states, so a good lawyer and a judge who doesn't really see things your way (I know judges are supposed to be "unbiased"... but let's take a reality check here... it happens) may take you to the cleaners.

I suggest you move out, find another living arrangement, and get some legal advice, as bobo stated.
