I own a 92 jeep cheroke and I admit I don't take the best care of it. This is mostly due to financial problems. Lately I think my transmission has been slipping but want to be sure.

What are some signs that your transmission may be slipping.

My vehicle shakes/vibrates when in motion. It also seems to have a clicking noise while driving that gets more rapid as I go faster. Sometimes it sounds like the gear is not switching and my car revs up more than it should before switching. It also feels like my jeep is about to stall a little bit. It kind of jitters, for lack of a better term.

I don't know if it is an oil problem or transmission. I really should get an oil change.

Usually a shaking or vibration is the result of a multitude of things like unbalanced tires, wheels out of alignment, a broken motor mount among other things. Usually a slipping tranny will not give you that symptom.

I am assuming you have an automatic by the description of it reving up too much before shifting. What I would do in that instance is check your tranny fluid. If it is low it will slip and then eventually burn up the bands in the tranny so that it requires a rebuild. Also it should be red not brown and should not smell burnt. I am usually not a fan of repairs in a bottle but I have used Lucas Transmission Fix many times with very good results. I have slipping trannies stop slipping and have even extended the life of a tranny that was about shot by about 10K. Just make sure that you do not overfill the transmission. Pull the pan off the bottom of the transmission too drain the fluid and replace the filter which will be attached to the underside of the tranny with one or two bolts. (Buy the filter before the fluid change and you will know exactly what you are looking for). Replace the pan (with a new gasket) and do not overtighten the bolts they only need to be a smidgen past snug. Put in a bottle of Lucas Transmission fix and top off with transmission fluid.

If that doesn't work then you may need to get her checked out by a transmisison specialist.

The shaking and clicking could be due to worn out u-joints. Have those checked as well as the advice that ddollinger already gave.
