I am a renter and the landlord is planning to replace the bathroom floor. Not only does the current floor have a "hole" in front of the bathtub but when you're down near the toilet, like to clean the bottom or wash the floor around it, the smell of urine is really strong! Even when I clean with bleach or a good cleaner with a good scent it still smells. Could that possibly be urine soaked into the subfloor? Gross question, I know, but he's planning on a do-it-yourself project and I want to know if we should just tell him to buy more board. I think he plans on "filling" the hole.

Gina...

The odor could certainly be urine soaked into the floor... it could also be urine/waste that has leaked out and is hanging out UNDER the toilet where you can't see or clean it, but it still leaves an odor.

When the landlord removes the toilet you guys will all be able to see what the floor looks like. If he plans on patching I'm betting it will include the area around the toilet base.

When he removes the toilet it will be a good idea to take a 20% bleach solution and... using gloves... clean the bottom of the toilet where wax gasket will go. Have the landlord remove the old wax gasket first!

That should be all you need to do in this case.

Let us know if you have more questions...
