The previous owners of my house started building a pool. However they never completed it and now I am sitting with the hole in my yard. :(

Luckly it is not that deep. :) I think filling it with sand will do, but I don't know what kind of sand will do or if that is the right thing to use.

Please advise what I can do to fill this hole and that when it is even the grass can just grow over it.

How big of hole, what are you going to do with that area,
? Large cat box, the sand thing comes to mind. Getting fill dirt bought in and properly fillled would be the best

I think you'd be wasting a lot of money to fill with sand and plants will not grow well in plain sand. I'd fill with fill grade materials first like construction clay and/or dirt. Sometimes you can get this free if there is construction going on near you. Leave and compact the fill and then top cover with at least 6" of native soil or black dirt. See, rack in and water every day for about a week, you'll have grass.
